Fantastic Voyage 2011-Here We Come!   4 comments

I decided to start this blog in an attempt to contain all of the excitement I have about joining Tom Joyner’s 2011 Fantastic Voyage (FV).  Hopefully, maintaining this blog will make the days between now and embarkation go by faster.

I listen to the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) everyday and year after year, I’ve been hearing about all the fun that goes down during this 8 day, 7 night event.  I have been really wanting to take this trip each year, but have been hesitant because the cost is very expensive and it has always sailed in May, which is pretty close to the vacation Donovan and I like to take annually for our anniversary.  Two weeks ago, on a whim, I decided to book the cruise because for the first time ever, they were auctioning off cabins.  Also, the cruise is taking place in March, and from a new port-Galveston, so I’ll get to see my relatives in Houston.  Also, Donovan and I will both turn 30 this year, and I can’t think of any better way to celebrate (even if it is a few months before our birthdays:))

Everybody knows that Donovan and I really enjoy cruises.  We think they are a great deal for what you get- you have the opportunity to travel to multiple far-away places, have as much food as you want, and enjoy all kinds of entertainment. This will be the sixth one for me and the fifth one for him.  But this is not just any cruise.  It is, as Tom Joyner always says, “A Party with a Purpose”.  A large portion of the cost is tax deductible because the money goes to the Tom Joyner Foundation, which helps keep students in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).  I am a graduate of an HBCU and Donovan is currently building at one, so we think it is fitting to support this cause.

The icing on the cake, however, has to be the entertainment.  If you’ve been on cruises before, you know that there is a ton of stuff to do 24/7.  But entertainment is taken to a whole other level on the Fantastic Voyage.  There are so many entertainers-actors, actresses, singers, comedians, etc.  Being able to come in contact with so many famous people at one time is what makes this cruise so unique.  The headliners who have been named so far for the FV 2011 are Charlie Wilson and Fantasia, and I can’t wait to see both of them!  I love R and B from the 80’s and 90’s, New Jack Swing in particular, and there will be many musicians who were big during that era on the cruise-Salt and Pepper, SWV, Tony Terry, and Jon B to name a few.   Donovan will probably be most excited about the comedy.  We’ll have the chance to see Sinbad, George Wallace, and from the TJMS-J. Anthony Brown, Huggy Lowdown, and possibly D.L. Hughley.

I plan to update this blog as I count down the days to the big trip.  After the voyage is over, I’ll also post pictures and more details about the cruise. There currently are not many websites with a lot of details about the Fantastic Voyage. The best one by far is Mike’s Trip Reports.

Bon Voyage!!
